With today’s cinematic atmosphere accelerating at a faster pace, there are movies which attract audiences through its star power or sometimes through directors who have ruled the box offices for a considerable time. Kadal belongs to the latter category. A directorial venture from the esteemed man Mani Ratnam, Kadal introduces 2 newcomers and 2 more young artists to powerfully portray the sequence of Good versus evil.
It is based on a young youth who has no goals, with the backdrop of a fishing hamlet. The essence of the film is the ongoing differences between the characters Arjun and Arvind Swamy.It will not be wrong to shoulder the credit of the movie on the shoulders of Arvind Swamy. What a power packed performance! He has been out of picture for quite some time, and he immensely owns the movie as the character of Father Sam. From the nuke and corner of every human emotion, be it love, peace, aggression or the strength to perform Jesus’ doctrine, it is indeed proficiently performed by Arvind Swamy with countless emotions. Arjun is no doubt a barnstormer for Arvind’s character with a antithetic evolution and he definitely takes the show with the action. An angel and Satan, from the holy bible is certainly the inspiration. It does not comment on any religion, but shows the difference between the good and the bad.
Gautham, definitely demonstrates his acting skills imbibed from his father Karthik Mathuraman.Gautham makes his way to show off the love deprived and negatively revolved Thomas. Initial childhood scenes of Gautam run to the mark, specially the child. His dreadful and frightening portrayal really keeps one inclined.
Technically speaking, Kadal brags the renowned names. With films like these, on tremendous occasions we might expect the cinematography to completely boast and take on. But Rajeev Menon does not give any chance to overshadow his lenses on the plot. He has done some appeasing work and reflected one of his best contemporary work. Some scenes leave a deeper impact on your thoughts even when you come out of the theatre. That is powerful indeed!
No doubt, the A.R Rahman and Mani Ratnam merger creates musical magic throughout. Nenjukulle , does try to go well with the dialogues. Elay Keechan, Moongi thottam are some live and catchy numbers which are appealingly shot. Magudi contributes to enhance the title role and Gautham’s transformation pivot.
The coastal accent in Jayamohan’s dialogues are not sufficed, they lack uniformity. The art director Sasidhar Adappa has done a commendable work in Kadal with church and art demonstrations in the climax portion.
Kadal moves at a slow pace, with its first half moving in strategically, the second half has twists and turns that gives a meaning to the film. Despite the collision of the opposite characters , which is the primitive base of the story, there is very little depth for the other sequences to rely upon. Ditto for romance aspect of Gautham and Tulasi.the psychological condition of Tulasi’s character and her connection with Arjun is not vivid and does not fetch a clear dimension.
To conclude on the above, there are expectations laid beyond the bar when Mani Ratnam is the man behind the camera. Audiences have always looked for thought –provoking, larger than life roles of characters, and romantic visualization in Mani Ratnam genre. Kadal makes efforts to captivate the general audience with sheer intensity. Although Mani Ratnam fans would love the movie as they patiently and positively wait to see Mani Ratnam rekindling the magic again.Overall a good movie which has been aesthetically made.
Rating & Verdict :- Good to Watch
One may not have seen the movie yet, but must have heard of it already as Vishwaroopam (in Hindi version, ‘Vishwaroop’) is the most-talked Indian movie at present. The movie does not encourage any hatred towards Muslims nor does it endorse any political issue. But is simply an entertaining film with definitely a motif of the battle against the terrorism. After handling the controversy regarding some scenes of the movie, the director Kamal Haasan must feel relieved now, as the movie is re-releasing on February 7 in Tamilnadu. Hope, the edited movie would not lose the actual plot of the movie, as Kamal Haasan tried to portray in front of his audience.
Vishwaroopam also used the latest audio technology, named Auro3D for enhanced audio experience. After the Hollywood movie, Red Tails, Vishwaroopam is only the second movie to be using such technology. Vishwaroopam is also the first film as it is getting released via direct-broadcast satellite, which is also called as direct-to-home (DTH). Quite a few crews came from the United States for helping the team with the technical expertise they have and that truly has contributed a lot in the movie.
It would not be fair for the readers if the whole story gets revealed here. But as people know, the movie is based on terrorism, and so then to be honest, there must be a display of blood and violence to some extent. Who could fit better than Kamal himself, as the Kathak teacher in the movie? Kamal Haasan aptly justifies to his fame; through his acting, his stunt choreography. Another brilliant actor Rahul Bose as the antagonist AL-Qaeda Jihadi, Omar steals audiences’ attention and so does Jaideep Ahlawat. The other lead faces such as Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Nassar, and Shekhar Kapur were appropriate to their roles. Both the hidden and unambiguous messages from the dialogs attract the audience and it is also up to the audience to explore the meaning of them. But some of the characters from the movie, while speaking Tamil put strain on the ears indeed.
So let us now highlight on the technical aspects of the film. The screenplay of the movie is quite dynamic and claims attention from the audience and keeps them involved into the story throughout the movie. The director tried to present the film with a theme of war against terror, rather than any political motive and the screenplay aptly follows the main purpose.
The cinematography of the movie is another aspect, where the movie deserves appreciation, where Sanu Varghese did express his excellence honestly and completely. The camera techniques have worked amazing having the Afghan landscape setting. The art direction in the movie is great as well. There is nothing to talk about Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s touching creation. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the trio has created their magic again and the music contributes so much to this movie. Mahesh Narayanan’s editing was sufficient, although the end part of the movie could have been more logical through his work. The action sequences with high class perfection, visual effects; all these lead the movie towards success.
The movie might upset some of the audiences for the abrupt ending, but that is why the sequel of the movie is very much expected. No doubt, that the controversies have stirred up the popularity of the movie and despite all the obstructions created by the Muslim extremist groups, Kamal Haasan’s movie has managed to achieve positive feedbacks from the film critics so far. If you an intelligent movie-buff then this is a must-watch movie for you. Do not wait any longer and hit the theatre to discover the ‘Vishwaroopam’.
