Jyothika is one among the rare breed of actresses who has come a long way in her career. From a humble beginning in Valee, playing second fiddle to Simran, the Mumbai girl has carved a niche for herself.
Among a long list of heroines who didn’t flinch from the skin show, Jothika was different. She relied on performance.
She made her debut with a Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna directed by Priyadarshan opposite Akshaye Khanna. Though the film did not do well at the box-office, she came to be noticed by the Tamil and Telugu industry and proceeded to act in Kollywood. Her first Tamil movie as a heroine was Poovellam Kettupaar with Suriya. A string of successful movies followed. Among them were Kushi, Dumm Dumm Dumm and Snegithiye. She acted in Manmadhan opposite Silambarasan and won praise for her performance in it.
Films like Chandramukhi, 12B, Perazhagan, Khaakha Khaakha and the recent Pachaikili Muthusaram and Mozhi have won her several awards and acclaim.
After her romance with actor Suriya culminated in their wedding, the actress chose to bid goodbye to acting.
Her decision to call it quits after her marriage is indeed a loss to the Tamil film industry. Easy and natural in displaying emotions, she brought out the right expressions and essayed challenging roles with ease,’ say her co-stars.
Directors like Gowtham Menon, Priyadharshan and Radha Mohan too have urged Jothika to reconsider her decision. That remains to be seen.
